Skichalet Aurora

Ski-in/ski-out chalet, directly on the blue piste. The chalet is in a fantastic piste side location, situated just above the village on the side of the Galzig, it is a blue run down to the Gampen and Galzig lifts and 100% snow sure till the end of April. St Anton isn’t known for its choice of slopeside chalets but if that is top of your priorities then this is the chalet for you. Ski back to the chalet at the end of the day and store your skis in the heated ski room with boot dryers/warmers. To the dismay of the chalet staff and the untouched afternoon treat, the lively and very popular Mooserwirt and Krazy Kanguruh are virtually on the doorstep, both great venues to end your days skiing that truly have to be experienced to be believed (these bars close by 8pm so they won’t disturb your evening). The resort is about a 8/10 minute walk down the piste, and not much longer if you opt for the road. Coming back up from town, you can take the local bus (free ski bus during the day or night bus with fare) which stops just a couple of minutes walk from the chalet. The chalet is situated in a tranquil location at the end of a private cul de sac and hardly any traffic. Chalet Aurora is a comfortable St Anton chalet that sleeps up to 12 people in five spacious bedrooms, one of which is a self contained ensuite studio. There is a dining room with flatscreen TV and the advantage of a separate living room with flatscreen TV which is comfortable and cosy and offers a great place to relax. Park your car for free at the chalet. Your chalet staff live out, so your privacy is completely guaranteed.

Sankt Anton am Arlberg

St Anton has it all; classic, matchless skiing, a superb snow record, mile upon mile of piste, limitless off-piste adventure, gentle Austrian charm and irrepressibly varied après-ski. No wonder it is a resort which has to be skied at least once by any keen skier and many visitors return year after year. Grouped around the onion-domed church, St Anton has a traditional enhance its laid-back ‘Gemütlichkeit’, a word hard to translate but easy to experience when tucking into a plate of apple strudel by an open fire in a wood-panelled mountain hut. A favourite of several Royal families, it has retained its feel as a traditional Austrian Alpine village. As for the village itself, St Anton has retained all its traditional Austrian charm, and its part-pedestrianised centre makes an attractive and atmospheric heart to the resort. The après-ski is just as much fun, and often as strenuous, as the skiing, beginning even before you’ve shed your skis and boots, with gluhwein and even a spot of dancing to live music at vibrant mountain bars like the Mooserwirt and Krazy Kangaroo. Keeping the accent on character, quality and tradition, St Anton has retained elements lacking in many ski resorts, romance, international glamour and the fun of doing something other than skiing. On the Orient Express route, St Anton’s railway station sees trains sweep in from capital cities, from Paris to Vienna. You can take a horse-drawn sleigh on a moonlit ride through the forest, or sledge down the trail from the Rodelhutte. Skating, curling, walking, swimming, cross-country skiing and even indoor tennis are perfect foils to the more customary skiing, eating and drinking.

Ski Arlberg

St Anton has been luring skiers for over a century, both for its splendid skiing terrain and for the very factor which used to deter travellers from crossing the Arlberg Pass, lots of snow. For reasons not completely fathomed (folklore says that ‘Frau Holle’ shakes her heavenly feather duvet much more vigorously here than elsewhere in Austria) the Arlberg receives an abundance of snow, far more than normally expected at a resort of 1300m. The famous Arlberg Kandahar race has been cancelled twice in the last decades, due to too much snow. Many people have first put on skis in St Anton and for them the Nasserein area is the perfect location with lovely blue runs down from Gampen at the top of the gondola to progress to as you improve. St Anton has incredible skiing for intermediates, with the ‘Happy Valley’ for those who are looking for lovely cruising runs, and the wide open slopes of Lech and Zürs offering sensational scenery and great snow. There are plentiful challenges too at all levels, including bumps and unpisted ‘deep snow trails’ to explore, and the men’s World Cup downhill run is not to be missed! Quite simply, this is one of the world’s absolute best resorts for expert skiers, with a magical variety of consistently challenging skiing, including fiendish blacks, exhilarating off-piste and bumps galore. In short, this is definitely one of those resorts every keen skier wants to notch up on their ski-pole. The lack of black runs on a piste map is deceptive as St Anton’s black runs are now called ‘ski-routes’, not pistes. The steep mogul runs down from the peak of Schindler may seem endless but don’t make St Anton the exclusive domain of the expert. The inter-linked areas of Stuben, St Anton and St Christoph offer enough skiing to keep most happy for weeks, but the Arlberg ski pass also covers Lech, Zürs, Warth and Schröcken. Unlike less prestigious Austrian resorts, St Anton has always attached great importance to having an efficient lift system backed by snow cannons on the lower slopes.
