Sankt Anton am Arlberg

St Anton has it all; classic, matchless skiing, a superb snow record, mile upon mile of piste, limitless off-piste adventure, gentle Austrian charm and irrepressibly varied après-ski. No wonder it is a resort which has to be skied at least once by any keen skier in search of world-class skiing. Grouped around the onion-domed church, St Anton has a traditional, village atmosphere. The accent on the local and the traditional enhances St Anton’s enjoyably laid-back ‘Gemütlichkeit’, a word hard to translate but easy to experience when tucking into a plate of warm apple strudel by an open fire in a wood-panelled mountain hut. The centre of the village is traffic free and is full of traditional character. The beautiful painted exteriors of the buildings in the bustling shopping district provide a perfect backdrop to enjoy your non-skiing time. There are a number of places serving the exquisite hot chocolate and cakes for which Austria is justifiably famous. Keeping the accent on character, quality and tradition, St Anton has retained elements lacking in many ski resorts, romance, international glamour and the fun of doing something other than skiing. The après-ski is just as fun, and often as strenuous, as the skiing, beginning even before you’ve shed your skis and boots, with glühwein and even a spot of dancing to live music at vibrant mountain bars like the Mooserwirt and the Krazy Kangaroo. After dinner, those with the energy find that the night-life, in hot spots such as Piccadilly, Postkeller and Hazienda, is as legendary as the skiing. For the day after the night before there is nothing better than a visit to the Arlberg-well.com centre which is situated at the bottom of the slopes by the open-air ice rink. This complex includes a beautiful swimming pool, massage and gym facilities.

Ski Arlberg

A world-class resort, set at the heart of the vast Arlberg Ski-Circus, and deservedly rated as one of the finest resorts in the Alps, St Anton offers some ot the best skiing in the world. It is a truly, unique beautiful Tirolean town with a world famous reputation on and off the slopes. Along with the neighbouring villages of St Christoph, Zürs, Stuben and Lech, the Arlberg area offers some of Austria’s most extensive and challenging skiing with a truly spectacular mountain backdrop. St Anton has been luring skiers for over a century, both for its splendid skiing terrrain and for the very factor which used to deter travellers from crossing the Arlberg Pass, lots of snow. For seasons not completely fathomed (folklore says that ‘Frau Holle’ shakes her heavenly feather duvet much more vigorously here than elsewhere in Austria) the Arlberg receives an abundance of snow, far more than normally expected at a resort altitude of 1300m. The famous Arlberg Kandahar race has been cancelled twice in the last two decades, due to too much snow. The inter-linked areas of Stuben, St Anton and St Christoph offer enough skiing to keep most happy for weeks but the Arlberg ski pass also covers Lech, Zürs, Warth and Schröcken. Ski down to the 13th century village of Stuben or to the more glamorous St Christoph for a lunch in a tradtional restaurant. Alternatively don’t miss the opportunity for a day’s skiing on the groomed pistes of neighbouring Lech. Keep your eyes peeled for the rich and famous and maybe the odd sighting of royalty in Lech. The nearby ski area Sonnenkopf in Klösterle is also covered on the St Anton lift pass, although not connected by pistes. St Anton has four ski schools that compete to provide exemplary instruction (small classes with excellent language as well as skiing skills) and plenty of amusement.

  • Skiing altitude 2811 metres
  • Pistes 335km
  • Number of lifts 96
  • Fun-parks 4
  • Villages in Ski Arlberg: St Anton, Lech, Stuben, Zürs, St Christoph, Warth, Schröcken, Klösterle, Zug
