Sölden
The Village
'Think Big, Think Sölden', a slogan equally applicable to the skiing terrain and the party scene. Sölden is the largest ski resort in the Ötztal Arena. The resort is high and snow-sure, and there are two glaciers so you can ski in Sölden even during the summer! The tree-lined valley is beautiful with Tyrolean buildings however the village itself is bounded by a busy main road and has a lot of traffic even through the centre. Despite the high mountains around it (the Sölden ski area boasts three peaks over 3,000m) the village of Sölden is set in a sunny location at just under 1400m in altitude. In Sölden there are over 20 mountain restaurants and chalets; from little wooden chalets with guitar-playing guests to more luxurious restaurants. The town itself has a Tyrolean charm and the local bars have a fantastic atmosphere. The resort became very popular because of its aprés-ski scene and it can get quite rowdy in the evenings. Being the largest resort in the area it also naturally has the most shops, restaurants and ski schools. There is also a bowling alley and cinema. Sölden now - and justifiably so - likes to promote itself as a resort interested in the full mountain experience and, while remnants of a wilder past are still visible the concentration is now on a more upmarket and family-oriented clientele.
The Ski Area
One of Austria's largest, liveliest and most popular ski resorts. The ski station is situated at 1350m and the domain reaches 3340m so there is nearly 2000m of vertical drop. The Ötzal Arena ski domain is also known as the BIG 3 thanks to its 3 peaks over 3000m - Gaislachkogl at 3058m, Tiefenbachkogl 3309m and Schwarze Schneid 3370m. For advanced skiers there is a daring route 50km long. For those who like to get off the piste why not hit the Boarder cross, Fun park or Half pipe? The resort is great for intermediates & experts, skiers & boarders.. although complete beginners are less catered for. It formerly offered summer skiing on its twin glaciers and whilst that has now ended it still has a long winter with ski-season opening festivals and the first northern hemisphere World Cup races each October and November. Snow is guaranteed thanks to the glacier back up. With two glaciers (Rettenbach and Tiefenbach) and two mountains (Gaislachkogl and Giggijoch), Sölden provides varied terrain for all skiing levels and is virtually guaranteed snow. It can take 45 minutes to reach Tiefenbach from Giggijoch but the views are breathtaking and the lifts comfortable. But the ski resort has undergone something of a facelift in the last decade. A major investment in the lift system has done away with much of the previous overcrowding on the slopes and the resort centre has undergone something of a facelift. The ski slopes above the town are split into two and are reached by two separate sets of lifts. The Giggijoch cable car at the entrance to the village passes over the higher suburb of Hochsölden, which can also be reached by road (winter equipment essential).
